There’s no such thing as a SUV with cheap insurance, particularly if you’re under 25.
I’d ask why you need one anyway, since like a lot of ‘lifestyle’ cars there’s quite a premium to be paid on everything from purchase price to insurance and fuel economy over a standard type of car like a Focus or a Golf.

Most older SUVs will struggle to beat 25mpg in regular driving and won’t get much better on a long run due to their barn-door aerodynamics.
If you’re determined, then a Honda CRV is probably the best option in terms of keeping costs down, but it’ll still cost as much to run as a small BMW.

If you really need an off roader, Land Rovers are the best bet, with Suzuki and the old Lada jeeps being good alternatives.

Quite honestly if you are a student I doubt if you can afford to. The Honda CRV or the RAV are good cars but you are aiming for a very old one which will have at least 100,000 miles and reliability may be a problem. You will not get more than 30mpg and the road tax will be £200.00. Insurance on a CRV is group 9. You might get a diesel Nissan X trail which would do about 37mpg but from experience I know that a new clutch in one of these can cost up to £1000 to fix (dual mass flywheel often goes at the same time). Also cost out tyres since these vehicles all have large wheels/tyres, tho you may be lucky and get one with newish rubber.
If you really want an SUV I would look at a Suzuki Vitara, tho I’m afraid road tax and insurance are not much lower than any of the others.

Subaru makes great cars. My wife drives a Forrester, gets good mileage and is near the top of the insurance institute crash tests results.

The Rav 4 and Honda CRV are all highly rated.

That will make your insurance expensive.

That will make your insurance very expensive indeed.

Unfortunately, that also makes your insurance expensive.

If that is the case, you simply cannot afford car insurance.
The average cost of car insurance for someone in your situation is £4,000 a year (about £330 a month).

There is no such thing and never has been.
Many insurance companies have simply stopped insuring anyone under 25, due to the high risk involved. Those that still offer insurance to young drivers will charge a very high price to do so (as you have found).

‘Cheap’ car insurance comes after many years driving experience and not making any claims.
There is NO other way.

That’s what car insurance costs young inexperienced drivers these days, there’s nothing you can do except pay it or buy a scooter instead.
The days of kids being able to afford their own cars are gone, unless they’re well off, I’m afraid.

Get quotes for 3rd party fire and theft.

But it also depends where you live, where the car will be kept overnight (in a garage is much cheaper than on the road) also the make of car.

Oddly it isn’t always the little cars for youngsters, when Top Gear did this (posing as teenagers LOL) Clarkson got the cheapest insurance quote for a big VOLVO, safe slow and reliable.

Personally these days I would put up with Taxis and public transport until you are at least 23 but 25 is the magic age when we all start to grow up and know what we really want and Car insurance drops steeply, and in the mean time you will have saved a lot of money.

FIND A DIFFERENT INSURANCE COMPANY, THE INVOICE WILL DO JUST FINE AND WHAT IS A STATEMENT OF REPAIR ANYWAY.

norwich union offer free motor insurance if you quote ebay to them. i got it when i bought a car from ebay. They quote £1000 when i applied for the seven days, but i found it for £200 elsewhere. needless to say the 7 days were gratefully accepted, but did not help them get the sale!.

First of all find aVAT registered garage

then no more than half an hours labour rate
that would cover testing the alarm+ writing out the letter to your insurance company

If your usual garage is VAT registered they may do this free for you

another way would be to find an alarm installer near to your location
